Two things never to put in a Wi-Fi name
Your network name is broadcast to everyone within range, all day, whether you're home or not. McAfee's advice is plain: "Avoid using your family name, address, apartment number, or router brand" (McAfee, July 2026).
- Anything that says who you are or where you live. "The Johnsons," "Apt 4B," "123 Maple Street." A name like that lets a stranger match a network to a front door. It also hands a scammer the detail they need to sound convincing on the phone. Keep the joke; drop the identification.
- The default name. "NETGEAR47" or "XFINITY-7A2B" tells anyone nearby you probably never changed the router's settings, including the admin password it shipped with (RouterSecurity.org, updated August 2026). Attackers look for exactly that.
Hiding the network name doesn't help. It feels secure, but your phone then has to call out for the hidden network everywhere you go, which makes your devices easier to track, not harder (RouterSecurity.org). Pick a name you don't mind the whole street seeing, and put your effort into the password instead.
While you're renaming it, change the password too

Changing the name and the password happen on the same screen in your router settings, and the password is the part that actually keeps people out. The steps for any router, plus Xfinity, Verizon, AT&T and Spectrum, are in how to change your Wi-Fi password. The Wi-Fi password generator makes a strong one, including a words option that's easy to read to guests, and it can print a QR code so nobody has to type it. Once you've set the new password, save it in a password manager so you can look it up from any device. NordPass has a free plan that does this.
If you want a separate name for visitors, turn on your router's guest network and give it one of the names from the last group above. Guests get internet; your own devices stay on a network they can't see.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Wi-Fi name have spaces and punctuation?
Yes. Most routers allow up to 32 characters, including spaces and common punctuation. A few older devices struggle with emoji or unusual symbols, so if a smart plug won't connect after a rename, that's the first thing to check.
Will changing the Wi-Fi name disconnect my devices?
Yes. Every device sees the new name as a new network and needs to join it again, with the password. Change the name and password at the same time so you only reconnect everything once.
Is it safe to use a funny Wi-Fi name?
Yes, as long as it doesn't include your name, address, apartment number or router brand. The name is public; the password is what matters.
Can I use the same name for the guest network?
Routers need different names for the main and guest networks. Pick a related one, such as "The Casa" and "The Casa Guest."
The short version
Pick a name you'd be happy to see on a billboard, because that's roughly what it is. Leave out your name, address and apartment number, change the default, don't bother hiding it, and spend the saved effort on a strong password.
